Karen Hutchins, MS, LPCC (she/her/hers)

These are times that impact one’s ability to “keep up” with the pace of society, and expectations of others and ourselves. Taking the time to process the feelings that come up, learning coping skills and evaluating what you are able to do, and what you do not have enough time or energy to do, can help with managing the stress of changing roles or responsibilities.

I listen and process deeply, helping you navigate concerns and sort through mixed feelings, and I guide you in listening to your inner self, in making decisions and taking next steps towards where you want to be.

I enjoy seeing people go from feeling like they don’t deserve to have needs, much less have them met, to communicating their needs, reducing depression and anxiety, and experiencing more confidence and empowerment.

I am continually inspired by the strength and caring of people I work with, and their willingness to learn and practice new skills to improve their lives and relationships.

When I’m not working, I enjoy yoga, dancing, reading, kayaking, cross country skiing, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

Therapeutic Approach
You will find that I am deeply empathetic and will guide you in exploring emotions to identify what kinds of events, situations, thoughts, etc., contributed to it.

On the other hand, you will also see that I have an irreverent sense of humor at times. I think humor and laughter are great at counteracting anxiety and seeing things from a different perspective.

Here are the most common approaches I use in the therapeutic process:

  • Mindfulness

  • Self-compassion

  • Motivational Interviewing (MI)

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills for managing emotions and effective communication skills

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to process stress, emotions or trauma

I frequently teach skills from DBT, because they are useful skills for life, and they are experiential. As we are mindful from moment to moment, our experience is continually changing.

Behavior Chain Analysis is also frequently used to explore the origins and sequence of events, thoughts, feelings and actions that led to a particular moment, whether that moment is a crisis or a breakthrough.

I provide EMDR and attachment focused strategies to individuals who have experiences a lack of secure attachment due to neglect or abuse to help clients heal from trauma and painful childhood experiences.

I truly enjoy my work and I love learning. I want to provide the best support possible, so I am continually attending trainings to expand my knowledge. Recent trainings include working with attachment issues and how they relate to trauma, and exploring working with different parts or aspects of self.

I look forward to getting to know you!
